Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the MDP Program in the online application?

On your graduate school online application please indicate that you are applying to the MDP Program by selecting “SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PRACTICE” as your major.

Who should apply?

We are looking for dedicated individuals who are highly motivated to tackle complex sustainable development challenges as broadly identified under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). You should have a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and applicable field experience. We strongly encourage both U.S. citizens and international applicants to apply. On average, 30% of students in each cohort are international.

Why should I be interested?

If you are currently involved or interested in sustainable development practice, the MDP Program provides you with an opportunity to join a new generation of development specialists who are analyzing and responding to sustainable development challenges of the 21st century. By completing the UF MDP degree you will join a global network of development practitioners who pioneer innovative responses to critical development challenges, including poverty alleviation, climate change, disease control and access to health services, natural resource governance and management, and many more areas critical to sustainable development.

How many students do you admit each Fall?

The MDP Program generally admits 10-15 students each year. In this way, the program continues to nurture an interdisciplinary learning environment where individual guidance and focus is pursued in each student’s academic program.

What will it cost?

Tuition and fees at the University of Florida are some of the lowest amongst US public universities, and living costs in Gainesville are also low relative to other cities in the US. Note that Florida residency can be established after the first year of study, and that in-state tuition rates will be charged to students who receive funding from certain sources such as graduate assistantships or book scholarships, even if they are not a Florida resident. Learn more about different funding opportunities here.
